We, at MSM are constantly trying to gather sponsors for our forthcoming chess and scrabble open tournements at SPCC. I want to offer big (i.e., substantial) prizes for at least the top three placers in two divisions, as we commonly hold each games' tournaments as well as the raffle where all participants win a prize. If you play chess and/or scrabble and would like to help us make this dream come true, please call me to recommend a potential sponsor for those tournaments. We will greatly appreciate it!!!
On July 1st (Canada Day) MSM sponsored a come and play chess event at the Sinclair Park Community Centre playground with big chess pieces to move, capture and mate. The SPCC at Point Douglas had been home to all Open Tournaments of Chess and Scrabble of MSM ever held and it was fitting to hold the large-piece chess matches among attendees. Several matches were played by myself against opponents with a lot of onlookers watching every move. What a day it was, if not for the rain....
On Saturday, Septermber 8th, the first MSM open scrabble tournament of 2018 will be held at the Sinclair Park Community Centre. Every scrabble enthusiast regardless of rating is invited to join and compete for cash and other prizes. I would like to invite those who played here last year and those who just knew of our organization recently. With a modest entry fee, an enthusiast will have a great time ahead. All participants are sure to get a prize in the raffle to be held at the day's end. Come and join us!!!
If you noticed your son or daughter is playing chess and intently taking interest i anything on this game, what to do? I suggest buying him or her good strategy and tactics books on the game, and take him to the Wednesday drop in sessions at SPCC to meet other chess players and play friendly matches with them regularly. Never laugh off his attention to this exquisite mind game and watch him grow into a gentleman, with respect to rules and order and a real good citizen....
This past month saw the publication of two separate articles about MSM on The Minor Hockey News community newspaper and the Peryodiko Newspaper. I and Ronnie Trias, our website editor, wrote these articles for the said publications without any monetary gain. Pictures from the recent scrabble and chess tournaments hosted by MSM at the Sinclair Park Community Centre were featured with the articles, with both taking half the page spread in these newspapers. Try to get your copies from various locations around the city....
I am looking forward to seeing you all at the board room of Sinclair Park Community Centre this Wednesday, January 3rd for friendly scrabble and chess matches that showcase your talent at these mind games. As usual, the victory is the prize itself and boasting rights to beating someone else, rated or unrated at his favourite game. See you there at 6 pm....
By this time, most of you who show up on Wednesday evenings at the Sinclair Park CC boardroom for a match of chess or scrabble will have known that the sessions are off until the end of the year. Regular sessions will resume on January 3rd, 2018 and I (Steve) will be there to see you play and socialize. I need the time away from the boardroom to plan and organize the lined-up activities for 2018. There will be a Chess and Scrabble Day at malls like Kildonan Place, Portage Place and Garden City Shopping Centre to begin with, where unrated players or learners and beginners can have actual chess or scrabble matches with rated players. Right now, these are planned for a Saturday for each mall and the activity is designed to showcase MSM upcoming tournaments at SPCC. Thank you all for not coming to the Centre on Wednesdays...
Even if late, we would like to acknowledge the prowess of Nilo Moncal, Marcus Valentino and Theo Wolchuk who placed first, second and third at the Third MSM Open Chess Tournament on June 10, 2017 at the Sinclair Park Community Centre where a total of sixteen players competed. Nilo also received aside from a cash prize, a Champion's Cup trophy from me...
