Welcome back to Mind Sports Manitoba on Weebly. We have not regularly updated this website, but it is an Official Website of MSM on Weebly. We appreciate the space this fantastic internet company is providing free to our non-profit sports organization based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, since 2015, with original founders Arvin Daoa and Steve Udarbe. Steve U., has remained at the helm of the organization and has overseen the past tournaments in chess and scrabble, held separately almost all years since founding. Arvin has moved to British Columbia but has kept interest in chess, and had participated actively in tournaments around Western Canada.
The 2023 Open Scrabble Tournament scheduled for June 25 has been postponed indefinitely due to venue issues. The Sinclair Park Community Centre will hold an event that the Centre could not refuse. We, the MSM staff gave in to the request and thus our tournament will be held at a still unannounced date.

The First Open Chess Tournament for 2018 was held this Saturday, April 21st at the multi-purpose room of the Sinclair Park Community Centre with 26 participants divided into two groups. Most of the players registered with Steve Udarbe long before tournament day and six did not appear but reserved their slots. Derek Ma topped Group A, with Marcus Valentino second and three tied for third place (Ryne Swift, Nilo Moncal and Fernando Orcullo). James Paeldin was no. 1 in Group B, Michael Sangalang was second, and five tied for third place (Pocholo Penafiel, Ryan Velicaria, Jim Melnyk, Ian Chatelaine and Ramon Sales). Cash prizes were awarded to all placers. The names of the two top placers will be engraved on the MSM Permanent Trophy and displayed at all MSM chess and scrabble activities. The fun part was the raffle of chess items for all participants where each player, when his number was called, had his time to select from the tableful of prizes. Co-tournament director was Blair Rutter, President of Manitoba Chess Association with Steve Udarbe awarding all the prizes. More news to follow...

The Fourth MSM Open Invitational Scrabble Tournament was held Saturday, September 16, 2017 with 16 players divided into two divisions. Curtis Kowalski improved his game and topped the list in the first division while Richard Charach was second, and Dick Bloemheuvel was third. In the second division, Angela Kapoor-Dozois was first, while Arthur Charach was second and Darlene Mcbride was third. Rounding the sixteen were Curtis, Eugene, Greg, Steve, Richard, Dick, Annalise and Harold in the first division, while Angela, Arthur, Darlene, Jerry, Patrick, Julie, Mila, and Maya were in the second division. The Third MSM Open Chess Tournament was held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 with 16 excellent chess players competing for the top prizes. Nilo Moncal was first place, receiving the Champion's cup and Marcos Valentino and Theo Wolchuk tying for second place after five rounds of play. Bong Perez, an official FIDE arbiter, came from Brandon, Manitoba to play, while a father and his two children came from Saskatchewan to join the tournament. The two children were given computer chess sets just for participating in the tournament. Chess sets and chess books were raffled and all participants won either of these items. Manny Araullo, new director of MSM, and Steve Udarbe, founder, presided over the tournament. __________________________________________________________________________The Third MSM Open Scrabble Tournament was held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Sinclair Park Community Centre Boardroom with seven die-hard and talented scrabble players vying for the top prizes. Many very interested players could not join because of prior commitments and also the Thanksgiving holiday celebrations, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players and the organizers. The "Magnificent Seven" were Julie Kading, Arthur Charach, Shireley Cooke, Curtis Kowalski, Donna Carruthers, Eugenio Ngantian and Steve Udarbe. Six rounds were played by each participant as it was a round-robin tournament, with Eugenio Ngantian emerging with the higher total winning spread over Curtis Kowalski breaking their tie, and declared the winner. Steve Udarbe and Julie Kading were tied too but Steve has a higher winning spread so he was declared as third place winner. The winner's name will be permanently engraved on the MSM Champions' Cup donated by Rey Duque Auto Care. Some boardgame items were also raffled in free draws after the tournament. Thanks to everyone who participated and hopefully in the next MSM tournament, more scrabble enthusiasts will join so that we will call it "The Devil's Brigade."
Pictures from the tournament are published in the Photo Gallery 3 section of this website and the Facebook page of MSM.

Good news from the Manitoba Chess Association!
Arvin Dawa, a board director of Mind Sports Manitoba, won the Manitoba Closed Championship hosted by the MCA held from May to August 2016 in Winnipeg. The Championship participants were the eight leading rated players of the province and Arvin in winning the series earned enough rating points to become the new National Master of Canada. Good work and congratulations, Arvin!

The 2016 Summer Fun Open Chess tournament was held successfully the whole day on Saturday, July 9th at the Sinclair Park Community Centre and here are the results: Four groups were set up with players doing a round-robin and the leaders played in the semi-finals. Pairings were drawn and after the championship round, Theo Wolchuk emerged as the winner, the youngest among the players too. Marcos Valentino was second, Nilo Moncal was third and Emil Vianzon was fourth. Cash prizes and chess sets were awarded to the winners. All participants also took assorted chess sets in free raffle draws after the tournament. Everyone was satisfied with the tournament format because groupings and pairings were done thru the luck of the draw, and not based on ratings. With this format, they realized that they had fair chances of reaching the finals. Thanks a lot for your participation in this tournament. Mind Sports Manitoba would like to thank the support and participation of Blair Rutter, president of Manitoba Chess Association. He played in the tournament, at the same time, acted as co-tournament director with Steve Udarbe.
