Saturday, March 14th, the 1st Sinclair Parck Community Centre Open Scrabble Tournament attracted veteran players who were divided in two groups and played five rounds of scrabble. First, second and third placers in each group received prizes. Two special prizes were given for the highest score in a game. Food was great and abundant, prepared by my wonderful wife, with all players and attendees taking home assorted platefuls. -Steve.
Wednesday, March 11 early afternoon, Steve and Arvin were at the Andrew Mynarski High School and conducted a chess clinic to students while Global TV reporter Mitch Rosset covered with audio and video segments for the evening and night broadcasts of the News program. Schoolchildren explored the game with actual matches while Steve went around answering questions from them and explaining some moves. Activities in the club getting busier, with the visit of chess champions like Marcus Valentino, Nilo Moncal, Gustav Baron, Arvin Dawa, all of whom played speed chess. Scrabble expert, Curtis Kolawski, played two grueling games against Steve Udarbe which lasted till closing time.
A group of high school students from Sisler namely, James Rivera, Alday Natividad, Joe Fuentes, Gary Galicia, JJ Galicia, Gerlyn Fabian and Paolo deGuzman, visited the club and played a lot of chess games. They said they would attend if chess clinics are held in their school.
During the evening, there were kids learning how to play scrabble: Aiza, Aicha, Makayla and Sarah (ever present on Wednesdays).Usually these were coached by Arthur, one of our scrabble experts. Ryan, a Grade 3 student and his brother, Stephan, Grade 8, together with their Dad, Andrew, visited the club and played chess for a couple of games. They quickly got used to using official chess clocks. Sarah and her friends, on the other hand, played scrabble.
S.U.: Last Wednesday, February 4th, about seven children together with their parents dropped by at the SPCC and played chess and scrabble. Arthur, a scrabble expert, took time to teach the children some basics of playing scrabble. The parents were so appreciative that they promised to drop by everytime they are free. They really had a great time that evening.
Two chess champions too, Marcus Valentino and Nilo Moncal came earlier to play casual speed games. S.U.: Last Wednesday, January 28th, at the drop-in centre, I gave some chess pointers to six-year-old Matthew Gillespie together with his father Jim for less than an hour. We covered topics like two kinds of chess notation, chess piece correct moves, emphasized pass pawn capture (en passant), and other basic chess info.
